South Korea’s record-breaking heatwave is no longer being treated as an unusually hot summer—it is now officially regarded as a national disaster. Following a sharp rise in heat-related deaths, President Lee Jae Myung has ordered an expanded nationwide response, signaling a major shift in how governments increasingly classify and manage extreme weather events.

Authorities reported that the death toll linked to the prolonged heatwave had climbed to 19, while more than 2,000 people have suffered heat-related illnesses since mid-May. The crisis follows South Korea’s hottest day since weather records began 122 years ago, when the city of Yangsan reached 42.5°C, surpassing every previous national temperature record.

Heat has traditionally been viewed as a seasonal inconvenience rather than a disaster.
